Violette de Bordeaux

This fig has a beautiful dark purple skin and pink interior when ripe. It's a heritage fig originating from France where it was deemed delicious enough to be cultivated by King Louis XIV. It has a fascinating leaf pattern where 1 plant can produce distinctly different leaf shapes from large rounded 3-lobed  leaves all the way to narrow finger-like leaves. 
 
The flavour is sweet and jammy, and deepens in complexity the longer you let it ripen. 
 
The breba crop (the first crop) ripens reliably outside on the west coast in early to mid August.  It's slightly smaller and less vigorous than the Olympian in out nursery outdoors, and it's a top choice for the west coast. 
 
The fruit will go from feeling light and foamy to feeling heavy, soft and squishy, and droop downwards when it's ripe.
